The year 2010 has come with more challenges for IMT-GT and CIMT. After 16 years of cooperation, where IMT-GT projects were then mostly categorised as “programmes and activities”, we are now moving on to a new period of what we call “projectisation era” with a pipeline of new projects.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has helped identify eight high-priority connectivity projects for IMT-GT amounting to USD2.2 billion. IMT-GT Ministers endorsed the projects at their 16th Ministerial Meeting in Melaka, Malaysia on 15 October 2009. They also endorsed a Subregional Project Development Facility (SPDF), which will help prepare the priority IMT-GT projects. The ADB was requested to provide technical assistance for the facility.
The year promises to be another busy year for all stakeholders. We shall be busy finalizing the Mid-Term Review of the IMT-GT Roadmap 2007 – 2011, and also the Business Process Review which is a review of IMT-GT institutional and delivery mechanism. The 16th IMT-GT Senior Officials and Ministerial Meetings in Melaka, Malaysia, IMT-GT broke new ground by having two new development partners, namely the Government of Japan and ERIA (Economic Research Institute of ASEAN and East Asia). Follow-up discussions are being initiated to identify joint projects.
To keep stakeholders abreast of development such as these, CIMT is also publishing a monthly newsletter starting from January 2010. It is essential that both the public and private sectors, are well informed of the various activities, plans and developments in IMT-GT.
I would like to take this opportunity wishing all IMT-GT stakeholders and visitors, “A more successful and prosperous New Year in 2010.”
